Welcome to the website of 645 VGS based at Royal Air Force Topcliffe, North Yorkshire.

We are all volunteers who provide basic flying training in the Grob 109b ‘Vigilant’ Motorglider, to young people in the Air Training Corps and Combined Cadet Force.

We predominantly serve the cadets of Central & East Yorkshire Wing and Durham & Northumberland Wing but also take cadets from all over the country on our annual courses. The courses we offer vary from Gliding Introduction Courses to Gliding Scholarships and also Advanced Glider Training. The ultimate aim for any cadet is to fly solo which is an opportunity we offer to most aged sixteen or older. Occasionally there is opportunity to progress onto become a Qualified Gliding Instructor for those showing particular aptitude or dedication.

We operate a fleet or four aircraft with the occasional use of a further three from our long term residents 635 VGS, who are also based at RAF Topcliffe. Collectively we are the largest Vigilant operator in the organisation and coupled with the fact we have a wealth of knowledgable instructors, we’re able to offer a first class service to our customers – The Cadets.

I hope you find the content of this website both informative and interesting. For joining information on courses, visit the ‘Courses’ Section. If you require information on the theoretical elements, visit the ‘Cadet Zone’. Whatever your reason for visiting 645 VGS you’ll receive a warm welcome from myself and my team.

We look forward to flying with you soon,

Chocks Away!
